Join us in June for a fascinating insight into the principles of space law and the contemporary challenges within the industry.
The Scottish Government’s Space Strategy has the ambition to make Scotland a “leading space nation” and to increase the worth of the Scottish space industry to £4 billion by 2030. Consequently, new opportunities are arising in the space sector for astronauts and lawyers alike.
This webinar is designed to provide all legal professionals with a foundational knowledge of space law, equipping you with the skills required to take advantage of the growing space law sector.
Learning outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of the laws which apply in outer space, and the laws regulating the space industry
- Learn how to apply legislation governing space activity to the daily operation of companies operating in the space sector
- Gain confidence in engaging with the contemporary legal challenges in the space sector, and in advising clients operating within this industry
Speakers
- Introduction to the Outer Space Treaty (1967) and the principles of space law, including non-appropriation and the freedom of exploration and use
- Understanding jurisdiction in outer space, and the limits of Article VIII of the Outer Space Treaty
- Introduction to the Outer Space Act 1986 and the UK Space Industry Act 2018. What is the purpose of this legislation? What kind of activities are regulated by these Acts
- Discussion of the European Commission’s European Space Law (EUSL). Is it sufficient for space activity to be governed by national laws or is cross-border cooperation required
- Introduction to the private space sector and the “New Space” industry – what type of commercial opportunities exist within this sector
- Discussion on the best practice for advising New Space clients, considering the applicability of the principles of space law discussed in the first session. (E.g. Is the principle of non-appropriation consistent with plans within the private sector to build settlements on other planets?)
- Is the current legal landscape sufficient to allow the space industry in Scotland to thrive? Considering Scotland’s ambition to become a “leading space nation” and “the home of New Space”
