Automated vehicles, also known as autonomous, self-driving or driverless vehicles, are vehicles that can move and guide themselves without needing a human driver or any human input whatsoever. They achieve so by using sensors to perceive what surrounds them.
With several manufacturers involved in self-driving technology and driverless taxi rides already offered in the USA, automated vehicles have started to become the focal point of legislative attention across the UK too, with the joint involvement of the Scottish Law Commission and the Law Commission of England and Wales. Given that automated vehicles do not fit well with the existing legislative landscapes, since these still centre on human drivers, they are bound to become a topic of great interest for ongoing law reform in the UK.
This seminar will provide you with a discussion on automated vehicles, how they operate, what technology they are using, in what sectors we should be expecting to see them in use in the future and what legal or ethical issues subsequently arise.
Learning outcomes:
- Learn more about the technology behind automated vehicles
- Examine what industries and sectors autonomous vehicles are going to impact on
- Examine the key legislative developments in the UK
- Critically explore the legal and ethical issues or risks that arise from the use of autonomous vehicles
