This webinar is designed for those concerned with the regulation of the internet and communications.
It has been one year since the Online Safety Act 2023 became law in the United Kingdom. This introduced a series of new criminal offences in England and Wales, and the offence of encouraging or assisting serious self-harm which extends to Scotland. This webinar will reflect on the objectives of the Online Safety Act 2023, and measure the success of this Act in its first year.
Much of the Online Safety Act 2023 will only come into effect once OFCOM publishes their regulatory guidelines, the draft proposals of which are expected in early 2025. This webinar will look ahead at OFCOM’s road map for regulation, and consider the changes which we are likely to see over the next year.
By attending this webinar, you will:
- Gain an understanding of the contemporary challenges in internet regulation
- Learn about the complaint’s procedure under the new regulatory regime, allowing you to confidently advise your clients of their rights online
- Gain insight into the new criminal offences and consider how these may make the internet safer
- An introduction to the Online Safety Act 2023 and its objectives
- What are the new criminal offences introduced in the Online Safety Act 2023? How do these complement the criminal law framework governing communications offences and sexual offences which existed prior to the Act coming into force
- In what respects has the Online Safety Act 2023 made the internet safer
- An introduction to OFCOM
- What is OFCOM’s role under the Online Safety Act 2023
