Legal 500 2026 rankings for Scotland revealed including 700 Hall of Fame names

1st October 2025 Written by: Joshua King

The new edition of the Legal 500 UK rankings is live for solicitors to explore following months of research earlier this year.

The 2026 rankings shine a light on the best firms and solicitors across the country, and now users can compare rankings side-by-side.

The team at Legal 500, which badges itself as a data- and AI-driven legal services and research platform, concluded that a "broader landscape of political and economic uncertainty has yielded a troubled commercial market in Scotland".

This year has not been a return to business as usual according to Legal 500 researchers.

Nevertheless, the energy sector continues to provide significant volumes of work with government policy changes and increased interest from international clients keeping the sector buoyant.

A spokesperson for Legal 500 said: "There is an ongoing trend of consolidation in the Scottish legal sector, manifesting both among independent Scottish firms, as in the case of the 2023 merger of Morton Fraser and MacRoberts, and among international firms looking to expand their offering.

"Both cases open the possibility for clients to access significantly enhanced services, presenting a challenge for small and mid-market firms competing in an increasingly prestige market. Unsurprisingly, Glasgow and Edinburgh remain the key hubs of activity, with Aberdeen also noted as a prominent base for work in the energy sector.

"The research for the 2026 Scotland coverage yielded nearly 550 rankings across 45 practice areas, with just under 60 firms featured in this year’s results. Scottish powerhouse Brodies leads the pack with 41 firm rankings, with Burness Paull following close behind with 39 rankings. Morton Fraser MacRoberts and Harper Macleod achieve 36 rankings each, and Anderson Strathern complete the top 5 with 30 rankings.

"This year’s coverage also features over 700 ranked individuals across the Hall of fame, Leading partner, Next generation lawyers and Leading associate tables. Brodies again tops the list with 112 ranked lawyers, while Burness Paull achieved 78 individual rankings. Pinsent Masons and CMS rack up 59 lawyer rankings each, and Shepherd and Wedderburn has 51 lawyers ranked."
