Scotland's biggest firm has announced a change of leadership - Iain Rutherford will replace current chair Christine O'Neill KC who is stepping down after four terms.
Brodies LLP - headquartered in Scotland - confirmed O'Neill will step aside in May after 12 years at the helm and be replaced by Rutherford, currently a partner, following an election.
O'Neill is considered one of the country's leading litigators, and an expert in public and constitutional law who will continue as a partner at the firm's dispute resolution and risk practice.
Rutherford has risen from a trainee, joining in 2003, to partner in Brodies' disputes practice since 2014. He has advised clients on a range of commercial disputes, with particular focus on IT/IP and energy disputes.
The incoming chair, a solicitor advocate and former member of Brodies' strategic board, said: "I am honoured to be taking on the role of chair. Having joined Brodies almost 22 years ago, the firm has experienced considerable growth, while still retaining the qualities that make it a special place to work.
"As Christine has done so expertly, it will continue to be a priority for me, as chair, to uphold our firm's values while supporting and championing our colleagues and clients."
O'Neill said: "It has been a privilege to serve as chair for the past 12 years, and a rewarding experience that has been enhanced by being able to work alongside so many, talented colleagues. With my fellow partners and colleagues I look forward to contributing to our firm's next chapter."
Managing partner Stephen Goldie added: "Iain's career journey with Brodies and his involvement in fostering a positive and inclusive working environment has provided him with an innate understanding of all that is good about our firm and our culture. That experience and insight will stand him in good stead in the role of chair.
"To Christine, I extend my utmost thanks for her leadership and for exemplifying the professional and personal values that are important to Brodies. She has brought considerable wisdom and unwavering commitment to the role of chair, and clients and colleagues alike will continue to benefit from those qualities in her role as partner."
Brodies is the largest firm headquartered in Scotland measured by income, directory rankings and lawyer numbers. The firm employs more than 100 partners and 800 staff across offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, London and Brussels.
