For International Men's Day 2023, we are kicking off a campaign asking men in the legal profession to prove how tough they really are by taking part in the Lawscot Tough Guys challenge. The challenge will run from 19 - 30 November 2023 with participants being in with the chance of winning a fantastic prize.
Why are we asking you to join the challenge? All too often men are told to be tough. Although significant progress has been made in terms of challenging traditional stereotypes of how men 'should' feel and behave, society still has the expectation that men are strong, tough, and should not show any form of weakness or emotion.
Contrary to the stereotypes, we know that men can be vulnerable, sensitive, and emotional but if society wants men to be tough, why not show them how tough you really are... just not in the way people expect!
What is the challenge?
The TOUGH challenge involves five different tasks that you are required to complete, in order to be in with a chance of winning. We want to inspire others to feel comfortable being vulnerable, to open up the conversation around men's mental health, and give you the chance to reflect on how you are feeling.
Why not get involved:
T – Talk. Reach out to someone and have a conversation. An old friend, family member, or colleague. Reach out and have a chat.
O – Outdoors. Get outside and get active, whether a 30 minute walk or a 10 minute run, do something active and get fresh air.
U – Understand. Try and be aware of how you're feeling. It can help you understand what your triggers are and why you might have feelings of stress or anxiety.
G – Give. Studies have shown that people who help others are more likely to rate themselves as happy. Why not make your spouse a cup of tea or offer to buy someone in need a sandwich.
H – Help. If you need it, don’t hesitate and reach out for help today! If you don’t need help why not let someone else know you are there for them if they ever need it.
How to get involved
It's simple. Follow these steps and be in with a chance of winning our prize!
- Complete the tough challenge tasks.
- Let people know you took part by sharing a post on social media using a picture of yourself.
- Use the hashtag #LSToughGuys, so we can track the campaign and make sure you're entered into the draw.
In addition you can:
- Add a link to this page so people can find out more about the challenge.
- Nominate people to take part.
Here's an example:
Today I checked-in with an old friend as part of the #LSToughGuys campaign to show my support for men's mental health and to break down the social constructs associated with being a man! Find out how to join in here: (LINK). I am challenging (nominee one) and (nominee two) to show how tough they are.
What do you get out of it?
The aim of the campaign is to start an honest conversation around men's mental health, in the hope that seeing others undertake these activities could convince someone to take part and improve their own wellbeing.
As a thank you for taking part, a draw will take place on the 30 November and one random participant will receive an experience of their choosing around the theme of the #LSToughGuys challenge.
To be in with a chance of receiving the experience, please use the hashtag #LSToughGuys when you take part in the challenge.
If you're keen to join the conversation, look out for our posts on LinkedIn and Instagram and get involved! Remember to tag #LSToughGuys
