Letter: AFLA's positive impact

10th July 2014 | client relations , practice management

To coincide with Armed Forces Day events, a reception to mark the progress of Armed Forces Legal Action (AFLA) was recently hosted by Ken Macintosh MSP at the Scottish Parliament. AFLA is a nationwide network of scores of law firms committed to providing discounted legal services to members of the Armed Forces community (to include lifetime cover for qualifying wounded, and bereaved partners).

Success of the project one year after its inception is attributable to many different parties working together, to include the Law Society of Scotland, political leaders, the charitable sector and the law firms which have joined the cause.

While AFLA recognises that parties may require to sue the Government, it explicitly does not require a discount to be given in such circumstances. AFLA is committed to working with the Government to improve the quality of life of our Armed Forces community – it does not work against it. By deliberately adopting this strategic policy, the concept created by my son, an RAF officer and Scottish solicitor, will continue to receive the support of key military officers such as Air Marshal Graham Stacey CB, MBE and senior politicians from all parties. In so doing, AFLA will have a real, lasting and positive impact on those who serve.

Allan C Steele MBE, Honorary President, Armed Forces Legal Action, Giffnock
