Mission to make new lawyers' views heard

29th April 2016 | law society of scotland

Why did you apply to be the Council representative for new lawyers?
I really wanted to get involved in the development of the Law Society’s strategies and policies. Ultimately the work of the Society impacts on all of us, so I think it’s important for new lawyers to be able to feed into its key decision making body. I also knew it would be a great way to network, meet people from across a very diverse profession and see how we all fit into the bigger picture.

What are you looking forward to most about the role?
Meeting the other Council members and getting some exposure to the inner workings of the Society.

What are your priorities for your time as the Council representative for new lawyers?
My key priority is engaging with new lawyers and ensuring their views are heard on issues that impact on them, very often indirectly. From a personal perspective, keeping fair access to the legal profession high on the agenda is a big priority.

What’s the best way for new lawyers to get in touch with any ideas, issues or concerns?
I can be contacted on LinkedIn, Twitter (@ayla_skene), or through the Society, who can refer any queries on. I’m open to any comments/queries/requests for advice, no matter how trivial they may seem. So please do get in touch, even if it is just to say hello.

What keeps you busy outside of work?
My three month old border terrier is keeping my hands pretty full at the moment! Other than that I have fairly unrealised aspirations about getting fit, so I try to run and go climbing when I can.

More information about how the Society supports new lawyers can be found on the website at: www.lawscot.org.uk/education-and-careers/information-for-new-solicitors/
