Are you a part of our mentorship scheme and are looking to enhance your mentoring? Or, would you like to join us and foster the growth and success of others within the legal profession? Our training progamme looks to provide you with the tools to support your peers and build meaningful connections.
When you become a mentor with the Law Society of Scotland you will be matched with a 'mentee', who you can share knowledge with, guide, inspire and support. It’s a rewarding opportunity to give back and enhance your own skills in leadership and communication.
The training session: Elevate your mentoring
- Practical insights: gain perspective on the challenges and rewards of mentoring, enriched by direct experiences.
- Generational understanding: Exploring traits and characteristics of Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Z and Millennials to effectively mentor across generations.
- Live polls and chats: fostering real-time engagement and feedback.
- Breakout rooms: to participate in collaborative discussions.
Mentoring is a supportive relationship where an experienced individual (the mentor) provides guidance, advice, and feedback to someone less experienced (the mentee). The goal of mentoring is to help the mentee develop their skills, navigate their career or personal development, and achieve their goals. However, you don't necessarily have to be senior to be a mentor, you just need to have a skillset or some experience to share.
Mentoring relationships can happen in-person, online, or sometimes via methods like email. It's up to you to decide the best means of communication alongside your mentee, which might depend on their location, goals and preferences.
There is no standard profile for a mentee. Mentees range from LLB students to qualified solicitors aiming to move to a senior role, as well as those returning to the legal industry. Mentees might seek advice on anything, from how to stand out in the competitive traineeship market to how to balance a career successfully with caring responsibilities.
We have an online mentoring platform where you can see the profiles of prospective mentees and manage your requests for a mentoring relationship. We would usually suggest having one mentee at a time, ordinarily for around 4-6 months, but some people prefer to have a longer-term mentoring relationship and others work with several mentees.
- By becoming a mentor, you are contributing to the growth of others but also enhancing your own personal and professional development. Building meaningful relationships and witnessing another person’s growth can lead to strong emotional rewards and satisfaction.
- Mentoring provides a platform for continuous learning. You may gain insights from your mentee’s experiences, backgrounds, and questions.
- Mentoring often expands your professional network. Mentees may introduce you to new contacts, and you may connect with other mentors or professionals in the process.
- You have the opportunity to develop important skills for leadership, including active listening, talking through problems, giving advice and developing empathy.
