The Ca'd'oro
45 Gordon Street
Glasgow G1 3PE
This course is designed for those who have already completed the Scottish Mental Health First Aid training. Building on what was covered on the two-day SMHFA course, this half day training session will look more specifically at the context of being a MHFAider within a Scottish law firm.
Over the course of the day, our trainer will lead interactive sessions covering:
- Being a Mental Health First Aider: Reflections from real world experiences
- MHFA vs. formal therapeutic roles
- Realistic expectations: listening and signposting, not fixing
- Boundaries between colleagues, strangers, clients
- When and how to escalate safely
- Safeguarding policy overview
- Recording conversations
What will you learn?
During the course, delegates will:
- Explore the role of the MHFAer in practice
- Build confidence in boundaries
- Understand safeguarding in legal practice
- Learn safe, compliant recording practices if necessary
Like the SMHFA training, this course does not train people to be mental health workers.
Mental Health First Aid is an initial response to distress and all participants on the course understand that this help is given only until other suitable or professional help can be found.
Content note: Some parts of this course may cover sensitive topics, including self harm, suicide, depression, anxiety, alcohol and drugs. There will be a space provided at the training if you feel you need to step out of the room for a bit.
Who can apply?
This training is open to anyone who has already attended Scottish Mental Health First Aid training through the Law Society of Scotland.
The training will take place over one half day in-person and applicants must be able to attend the full course.
If you would like to attend but are unable to complete the form, please email ambershadle@lawscot.org.uk.
*Please note, there are limited spaces available on this course and should there be a high demand for the training, priority will be given to those working in smaller law firms. In addition, while we are funding the full cost of the course for participants, travel and accommodation costs will not be covered*.
