Norman Biggart CBE

Law Society president Christine McLintock pays tribute to past president Norman Biggart CBE.

Christine McLintock said: “We were very sorry to hear about the death of Law Society past president Norman Biggart.

“Norman joined the Law Society Council as a member for Glasgow in 1978, and was elected three years later to become president for 1982-83. Both as a Council member and office bearer, he was greatly involved with the work of the Society and particularly with the introduction of the Diploma in Legal Practice in 1980. The new diploma was established following recognition that there needed to be a bridge between the academic study of law at university and the life of the practising solicitors.

“Norman was also one of the drivers behind producing a new encyclopaedia of Scots Law, The Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia. It is the comprehensive and authoritative narrative treatment of the law of Scotland and remains a cornerstone of the Scots lawyer's library today.

“His commitment to the profession he belonged to and the Law Society was unstinting and he was awarded the CBE for his services to the legal profession.

“He will be remembered warmly by former colleagues and friends and our deepest sympathies go out to his family.”
