10 October date for Edinburgh and Glasgow Legal Walks
Edinburgh and Glasgow are the venues for this year's sponsored “Legal Walks” in Scotland, in aid of the Access to Justice Foundation.
Both take place on the same day, Monday 10 October. Each involves a 10km sponsored walk around the city to raise money for local advice services.
Legal walks, which take place all round the UK, have developed in response to the need for free legal advice centres, whch has grown in the past few years with the increased poverty and reduced support level of services since the recession, along with reduced funding for the advice centres themselves.
A collaborative body that helps with the provision of practical access to justice for those unable to afford help, the Foundation supports organisations that:
- prevent families being made homeless;
- prevent destitution;
- help older people gain the support to which they are entitled; and
- help women and children who have been trafficked for domestic servitude or prostitution.
Anyone is welcome to join the walks and there is no maximum or minimum number for a team – individuals are welcome. Registration is free, but participants pledge to raise as much as they can for the Foundation. Registration for each walk will be open between 5 and 5.30pm and the walk will take up to three hours, depending on the participants' pace.
Each walk features a photography challenge and for photos tweeted from the event using the hashtag #legalwalk.
