Amanda Millar to be Society Vice President in 2019-20
Perth solicitor Amanda Millar has been elected to be the Law Society of Scotland’s next Vice President.
Ms Millar will take up her role in May 2019, succeeding current Vice President, John Mullholland, when he begins his term of office as President.
She was chosen by members of the Society's Council ahead of Paul Matthews, who will continue as convener of the Society's Nominations Committee.
A partner at Perth firm McCash & Hunter, Ms Millar specialises in all aspects of mental health and adults with incapacity law, and is an accredited specialist in both mental health law and in incapacity and mental disability law. She currently sits on the Society’s board and the newly formed LawscotTech board, as well as convening the Society’s Professional Practice (Rules & Waivers) Subcommittee, and acting as an observer to the Mental Health & Disability Subcommittee.
Alison Atack, current President of the Society, commented: “I am delighted to confirm Amanda as Vice President-elect.
“Amanda has represented her constituents in Perth for eight years, and through her work in private practice and her membership of numerous Society committees over the years, she fully understands the high professional standards expected of solicitors.
“I know that Amanda will bring her knowledge, enthusiasm and commitment to the role of Vice President next year, particularly during a time of enormous change for the profession and public alike. There are a number of important issues for the Society to focus upon, particularly our work around the review of the regulation of legal services, following the publication of Esther Roberton’s report, and of course the continuing negotiations around the UK’s decision to leave the EU.”
Ms Millar responded: “I am delighted to be taking up the post as the Society’s next Vice President and look forward to working alongside John during his presidency next year.
“I am very much looking forward to supporting and campaigning for the recognition and enhancement of much of the good work already being done by the Society on behalf of the profession and the public. To fulfil the Society’s mission of leading legal excellence across the world we must continue to engage meaningfully with all our stakeholders wherever they are located. This requires an open and informative approach in the interests of promoting and protecting the principles of the profession and thereby promoting and protecting the interests of all in our diverse society. I can’t wait to get started.”
