Annual lecture and debate to be part of SYLA Christmas
The future of advocacy will be discussed in two events to be held by the Scottish Young Lawyers’ Association (SYLA) in the run-up to Christmas.
On Tuesday 1 December, SYLA, together with the Society of Solicitors in the Supreme Courts and the Society of Solicitor Advocates, hosts its annual Christmas lecture in court 1 of the Court of Session. This year’s lecture will be delivered jointly by the Dean of Faculty, James Wolffe QC, and prominent solicitor advocate John Scott QC, addressing the topic of the future of advocacy before the Scottish courts. The lecture takes place from 6pm, with a supper for members being held downstairs in the SSC lounge after the conclusion of the lecture.
The following Tuesday, 8 December, the SYLA’s annual debate returns. Sponsored by Compass Chambers, the debate will see advocates Steve Laing and Robin Cleland debate the motion, “This House believes that the Junior Bar at the Faculty of Advocates is obsolete”. Advocate Richard Pugh will chair the debate, which takes place in the shadow of the implementation of the civil court reforms.
