Code of conduct introduced for family mediators

18th March 2019 | dispute resolution , family-child law , professional regulation

A new code of conduct and statement of principles has been introduced for family mediators accredited by the Law Society of Scotland.

The code and statement have been developed at the request of the Lord President to ensure that the Society's accreditation scheme demonstrates the high standards that mediators work to.

President Alison Atack said the code and standards had been based on the practice in other mediation organisations such as CALM (Comprehensive Accredited Lawyer Mediators), and the Society had consulted closely with working family mediators to ensure they were standards were workable and relevant to them.

As of 11 March 2019, anyone who applies to be accredited as a family mediator by the Society will be required to confirm they will abide by the terms of the code and statement, and existing family mediator will be expected to observe their terms.

"This is an exciting development, aimed at enhancing your practice in this area", Ms Atack added.
