David Young QC appointed a sheriff

David Young QC has been appointed a sheriff in the Sheriffdom of South Strathclyde, Dumfries & Galloway, based at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

The appointment, by the Queen on the recommendation of First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, follows a report by the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland.

David Young practised corporate law as a solicitor between 1989 and 1997, before qualifying as an advocate in 1998. After defending criminal cases in the High Court and sheriff courts, he was an advocate depute from 2004 until 2010 and the first depute head of the National Sexual Crimes Unit.

He was appointed Queens Counsel in 2011, part time sheriff in 2012, and a legal member of the Parole Board for Scotland in 2017.
