Death announced of Lord Kirkwood
The death has been announced of Lord Kirkwood, a Court of Session and High Court judge from 1987 until his retirement in 2005. He passed away on 22 April at the age of 84.
Lod Kirkwood (Ian Candlish Kirkwood) joined the Faculty of Advocates in 1957, after graduating at the Universities of Edinburgh and Michigan. A former international chess player, he took silk in 1970. He was one of five judges who heard and dismissed the appeal of Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi against his conviction for the Lockerbie bombing.
A note posted to the Faculty of Advocates' website said he had a reputation as "a genial, diligent and scrupulously fair judge".
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be announced at a later date.
