Dominic Grieve to speak on ECHR in Faculty Rule of Law Lecture
The former Attorney General Dominic Grieve QC is to give this year’s Faculty of Advocates Rule of Law Lecture, addressing the question: Is the European Convention on Human Rights Working?
Mr Grieve, MP for Beaconsfield, has spoken out in support of the Convention in the face of current Government policy to seek to replace it with a British Bill of Rights. He will consider how the Convention plays a crucial role in enhancing the rule of law across and beyond Europe. The lecture, which takes place in the Laigh Hall, Parliament House, Edinburgh, on 21 September, will be chaired by Joanna Cherry QC MP.
James Wolffe QC, Dean of the Faculty of Advocates, commented: “The rule of law underpins a just and economically successful society. This year, our rule of law event will focus on the protection of fundamental rights. I am very pleased indeed that Dominic Grieve QC MP has agreed to give this lecture.”
The lecture is a joint venture between the Faculty of Advocates and the Bar Council of England & Wales, and is facilitated by Beyond Borders Scotland, an organisation that seeks to harness Scotland's unique heritage in an effort to promote greater understanding and reduce conflict.
