Faculty committee to add focus on rule of law

The Faculty of Advocates has increased its recognition of the rule of law by bringing it within the remit of its Human Rights Committee.

The new Human Rights & Rule of Law Committee will be chaired by Dorothy Bain QC, who was formerly principal advocate depute and currently serves as a member of the Scottish Executive Committee of JUSTICE, the law reform and human rights organisation.

James Wolffe, QC, Dean of Faculty, said: "The rule of law and respect for fundamental rights are of the essence of a socially just and economically successful society. They are values to which the Faculty is committed, and which it is the Faculty's responsibility to uphold.

"I am very pleased that Dorothy Bain has agreed to lead the Faculty's work in this field. She was a distinguished principal advocate depute – the first woman to be appointed to that important role – and has a strong commitment to the values which underpin Scotland's justice system. "
