Guide published for social housing tenants before right to buy goes
Information for social housing tenants who still have the right to buy their homes has been published by the Scottish Government.
Right to buy, which has been progressively restricted since 2002, will be finally abolished from 1 August 2016 under the Housing (Scotland) Act 2014. Those who became social housing tenants for the first time since 2 March 2011 will not have a right to buy; tenants of longer standing may have some form of right.
The new guide aims to give tenants an idea of whether or not they might be able to exercise a right to buy, together with information about what the end of right to buy may mean for them and what they should do if they are thinking about buying their home.
Anyone wishing to exercise their right will have to make an application to their landlord no later than 31 July 2016.
