Philippe Sands QC to speak at Faculty open event
A high-profile international lawyer will be the guest of the Faculty of Advocates at an event on European Lawyers Day, 25 October.
Professor Philippe Sands QC will appear "in conversation" to mark the day designated by the Council of Bars & Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), speaking on the consequences for international law of recent political developments, and whether the rise of nationalism post-Brexit poses a threat to the global rule of law. The event is entitled "Contemporary challenges to global justice – crime, security, trade and expression in the age of Trump and Brexit".
Professor of Law at University College London and Director of the Centre on International Courts & Tribunals in the Faculty, Professor Sands is also an author and counsel who has appeared before a number of international courts.
European Lawyers Day 2018 has the theme "Why lawyers matter: Defending the defenders of the rule of law".
"It is particularly appropriate that a figure of international standing like Philippe Sands should come to the Faculty on European Lawyers Day", said Neil Mackenzie, the Faculty’s director of training and education.
"We are very keen that as many people as possible should have the chance to hear him, and the event is free and will not be restricted to members of Faculty but will be open to the wider legal community. Places will be limited, however, so early registration is advised."
The event is from 9-10:30am, in the Faculty’s Mackenzie Building. Click here for further information and to register.
