Same sex marriages top 1,700 in first year
One year from the first same sex marriages in Scotland, well over 1,700 couples have registered their union in this way, according to the Scottish Government.
Figures released today show that up to September 2015, a total of 1,710 same sex marriages had been registered, made up of 1,137 couples who have changed civil partnerships to marriages, and 573 new couples who have married.
The first day on which a same sex marriage ceremony could take place was 31 December 2014.
Communities Minister Marco Biagi commented: “We are now a year on, and around 2,000 people have been able to marry the person they love.
“This is something to celebrate. Scotland has shown the kind of country it is by leading the way, and ensuring we are a fairer and more equal country."
