Scotland should make refugees welcome: Lord Advocate
Scotland should welcome all people seeking refugee protection, the Lord Advocate, Frank Mulholland QC, said last night.
Speaking on a visit to the Uniting Nations in Scotland (UNiS) group, in Charing Cross, Glasgow, a community organisation founded to help refugees and asylum seekers of all backgrounds integrate into Scottish life, Mr Mulholland said it was one of his priorities to help ensure that all those coming to Scotland were able to find safety and support.
Mr Mulholland said: "I am delighted to have had the opportunity to visit and give my support to the work of UNiS and the Scottish Refugee Council to help refugee integration and inclusion and ensure that all refugees in Scotland are treated fairly, with dignity and with respect to their human rights.
“One of my priorities as Lord Advocate is to help create a Scotland where all people seeking refugee protection are made welcome; where men, women and children find safety and support and where all people who live in Scotland are able to achieve their full potential.
“Listening to the group’s stories and learning about their culture was a valuable experience for me and one I would urge others to share. UNiS and groups like them are a great example of people working together to build on our common bonds and in the process, a fairer and more tolerant society.”
