Society staff raise £8,300 for adopted charity
Law Society of Scotland staff have raised a total of £8,307 for staff charity the Stroke Association over the past year.
A huge range of fundraising activity contributed to the grand total, including walking the West Highland Way, running the Edinburgh marathon relay, a table tennis tournament, pub quiz, raffles and lots of bake sales.
Staff voted to support the Stroke Association for the 2016-17 practice year after their colleague Emily Malone passed away suddenly in July 2016 from a brain haemorrhage, a form of stroke. A different charity is adopted each year: staff supported Cystic Fibrosis Trust in 2015-16 and Fresh Start (help for homeless people in new accommodation) in 2014-15. The charity chosen for the 2017-18 practice year is Ovarian Cancer Action.
Jenny Selman, community and events fundraiser for Scotland for the Stroke Association said: “We were absolutely delighted to be selected as the Law Society of Scotland’s charity of the year 2016-17. Their fantastic fundraising activities throughout the year have all helped raise vital funds for our work in Scotland.
“Stroke is the third biggest killer and the leading cause of disability in Scotland and it’s only with the generosity of supporters like this that we can continue to raise awareness of stroke, support stroke survivors and their families, and fund life-changing stroke research.”
Lorna Jack, chief executive of the Law Society of Scotland, added: “I’d like to thank all of my colleagues for volunteering their time and skills over the past year. Tragically our colleague Emily passed away suddenly last year and this is an amazing amount of money we have raised in her memory to help to aid fundamental research into stroke.”
