Support invited for essays in honour of George Gretton

Subscriptions are being invited to help fund the publication of a book to celebrate the career of a leading figure at Edinburgh University's Law School.

Professor George Gretton retired last year after 35 years at the university, and a collection of essays in his honour will be published later this year.

Contributions are coming from academic colleagues of Professor Gretton from home and abroad, as well as from the judiciary and legal profession.

The work is being edited by three of his former doctoral students, Dr Andrew Steven, senior lecturer in the Edinburgh Law School and a Scottish Law Commissioner, Dr Ross Anderson, advocate, and Dr John MacLeod, lecturer in law at the University of Glasgow. The book will be published by Avizandum Publishing in December 2017.

During his career Professor Gretton held the Lord President Reid Chair of Law from 1994 to his retirement; served as Scottish Law Commissioner from 2006 to 2011; published prolifically in the fields of commercial law, conveyancing, property law, and trusts and succession law; established the annual Conveyancing Roadshow with Professor Kenneth Reid, which is now in its 26th year; and influenced the learning and careers of many students and law professionals.

He has authored or co-authored more than 150 books, chapters and articles. Behind the scenes, he also worked tirelessly to maintain and improve the holdings of the University of Edinburgh’s Law Library.  

Those who subscribe, at the price of £25 prior to 30 June 2017, will have their names included as subscribers in the book (unless they wish to remain anonymous). They will also receive a copy following publication. Individuals, firms and institutions are welcome to subscribe.
