SYLA confirms next events

15th November 2018

Four varied events either side of Christmas and the new year have been confirmed by the Scottish Young Lawyers' Association. They are:

Thursday, 22 November: SYLA/WS Society: Adventures in Law. SYLA is collaborating with the WS Society to introduce Adventures in Law, part of their student series. This will take place at the Upper Library at the Signet Library, Parliament Square, Edinburgh from 6-8pm. There will be a panel discussion hosted by Bruce Beveridge WS (former Law Society of Scotland President), and including Caroline Docherty WS (Deputy Keeper of the Signet), Ximena Vengoechea (advocate, Hastie Stable) and Malcolm Mackay WS (United Employment Lawyers). Each panellist will speak about their career before a panel discussion and opportunity for questions, followed by a glass of wine. Click here to book.

Tuesday, 27 November: Beyond the Basics: Children’s Hearings System, Glasgow (venue tbc). In association with the Children’s Hearings Improvement Partnership (CHIP) and Scotland’s national children’s charity, Children 1st, the meeting will hear from two members of CHIP – Anne-Marie McGinley from Scottish Children's Reporter Administration, and Alison Heron from the Glasgow Bar Association – as well as Andrew Jackson, who is on the safeguarders panel. Questions and networking to follow. Registration from 5.45pm; speakers present from 6pm sharp. The seminar may count for 1 hour of CPD. Click here to book.

Wednesday, 5 December: SYLA Annual Debate 2018, at the Mackenzie Building, Faculty of Advocates, Old Assembly Close, High Street, Edinburgh. In collaboration with Compass Chambers, and chaired by Susan O'Brien QC, Kevin Henry of Compass Chambers and Alexander Sutherland of Ampersand Advocates will debate the motion: "This house believes that Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a more effective route to justice and impacts the necessity for solicitors". The debate will begin at 6.30pm prompt. There will be questions and a vote to determine the winning side, with refreshments and networking to follow. Tickets are £5 each and all funds raised will go to Social Bite. Click here to book.

Wednesday, 6 February 2019: An insight into Martin Gilbert, Aberdeen Society of Advocates, Concert Court, off Broad Street, Aberdeen. Martin Gilbert is the CEO of Standard Life Aberdeen and will provide an insight into his career, part of which was obtaining an LLB from the University of Aberdeen.
