Tribute paid to former Society President Norman Biggart
The Law Society of Scotland has paid tribute to a former President, Norman Biggart, whose death has been announced.
Mr Biggart, formerly of the then firm of Biggart Baillie & Gifford, died on 10 March at the age of 86. He joined the Society's Council as a member for Glasgow in 1978 and served as President in 1982-83.
Expressing the Society's condolences, current President Christine McLintock said: "Both as a Council member and office bearer, he was greatly involved with the work of the Society and particularly with the introduction of the Diploma in Legal Practice in 1980. The new diploma was established following recognition that there needed to be a bridge between the academic study of law at university and the life of the practising solicitor.
“Norman was also one of the drivers behind producing a new encyclopaedia of Scots Law, The Stair Memorial Encyclopaedia. It is the comprehensive and authoritative narrative treatment of the law of Scotland and remains a cornerstone of the Scots lawyer's library today.
“His commitment to the profession he belonged to and the Law Society was unstinting and he was awarded the CBE for his services to the legal profession.
“He will be remembered warmly by former colleagues and friends and our deepest sympathies go out to his family.”
