Melanie Martin

Melanie is a partner in the Competition team.

Melanie has a wide-ranging competition law practice, with a particular focus on EU and UK merger control. She has represented clients before the Competition and Markets Authority and European Commission to obtain clearance, including Avis Budget Group Inc. and Stagecoach Group PLC and has handled merger filings in multiple foreign jurisdictions. She also has experience in all aspects of EU and UK competition law, including cartel investigations, leniency applications and dominance issues, and has attended multiple dawn raids by the competition authorities (both criminal and civil), including one by the European Commission in 2019. Other aspects of her practice include market investigations, distribution/agency arrangements, subsidy control/state aid and EU relations.

She has been recognized as a rising star by Legal 500 and an associate to watch by Chambers in relation to competition law. Clients say: "She is very good and thorough, and is on top of everything."

Melanie completed a six-month secondment as legal adviser to a leading oil and gas services company, where she gained experience in a wide range of areas, including drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, and international trade issues.

Experience

  • Avis Budget Group Inc. and Koç Holding: Advising on merger control issues relating to the acquisition by Otokoç Avis Holland BV (a joint venture of Avis Budget Group and Koç Holding) of Olympic Commercial and Tourist Enterprises, the Greek licensee of Avis Budget Group, from Piraeus Bank, including notifying the transaction to the European Commission under the EU Merger Regulation.
  • C&C Group PLC: Advising in relation to the competition aspects of its acquisition of the entire issued share capital of Matthew Clark (Holdings) Limited and Bibendum PLB (Topco) Limited and their subsidiary businesses Catalyst, Peppermint, Elastic and Walker & Wodehouse.
  • KKR: Advising on regulatory and competition due diligence in relation to their acquisition of Unilever's global baking, cooking and spreads business.
  • KPS Capital Partners LP: Advising on merger control and handling multiple foreign merger and foreign direct investment filings for KPS' acquisition of the Howden group.
  • World Fuels Inc: Obtaining merger control clearance for its acquisition of UVair European Fuelling Services Limited from the UK Competition and Markets Authority.
