Vice President 2025/26 | Serena Sutherland
Serena became Vice President in May 2025 and will be President of the Law Society of Scotland 2026-2027. Since 2018, Serena has served as the elected Law Society Council representative for the constituency covering Dingwall, Dornoch, Elgin, Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Lochmaddy, Portree, Stornoway, Tain, and Wick. Serena also sits on the Legal aid Sub-Committee and Complaints and Oversight Sub-Committee of the Law Society. She has previously sat on the Board and Finance Sub-Committee.
Serena is the owner of d and h a general practice high street Firm based in the north of Scotland. Serena joined the Firm in 2003 - and has worked her way up through the company completing the Law Society Exams and Diploma at The University of Edinburgh prior to her Traineeship. She became a Partner in 2008 before taking over as the sole Director in 2016. The Firm now has two offices in Orkney, an office in Thurso and various employees working remotely throughout the north of Scotland. Serena is joined in the firm by another Director, a Senior Associate and Trainee Solicitors. The Firm covers most aspects of general high street practice.
As a solicitor, she has a special interest in the area of family law and, in particular, with helping clients resolve issues around separation and children in a positive and efficient manner. Serena also advises on all aspects of Adults with Incapacity work, property and Executry disputes and manages the running of her Firm.
Serena acts as Curator at Litem, Safeguarder in Adults with Incapacity matters and Child Welfare Reporter as well as being part of The Office of the Public Guardian’s Professional Guardian scheme.
For many years Serena was also a Safeguarder appointed through Children 1st. In December 2021, Serena was appointed as a Legal Member of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland.
Outside of work Serena sits on the board of Advocacy Orkney, Relationships Scotland, Kirkwall BID and is a legal advisor to the Island Games Committee organising the 2025 Island Games in Orkney. Serena lives in Stromness and enjoys seeing friends, walking her dog Roxy, reading, going to the cinema and travelling.
