Women in Law Scotland, a group aimed at promoting gender equality in the Scottish Legal profession, is relaunching. A refreshed committee have been working over the course of the past year to redefine the group’s aims and strategy.
The relaunch event, which will coincide with the week of International Women’s Day 2025 (“IWD25”), will take place at The Scotsman Hotel, Edinburgh on 4 March 2025 from 6pm - 8pm. The event will feature a panel of speakers who are all leading women in the Scottish legal eco-system and discussion will centre around the IWD25 theme “Accelerate Action". After the panel discussion there will be opportunity for Q&A, followed by networking.
The panellists include:
- Susan Murray, President of the Law Society of Scotland and Senior Solicitor at the NHS Central Legal Office;
- Naeema Yaqoob Sajid, Founder of Diversity +;
- Wendy Durie, Partner at Thompsons Scotland; and
- Lindsay Jack, Head of Diversity, Careers & Outreach at the Law Society of Scotland.
Speaking of the event, Laura Meldrum, senior associate at Harper Macleod, and co-chair of the newly refreshed committee for Women in Law Scotland, commented: “The most recent Profile of the Profession conducted by the Law Society of Scotland indicated continued concerns about equitable progression with 61% of respondents believing there to be an issue with comparatively few women reaching senior positions in the legal profession. Women in Law Scotland believe that in order to make tangible strides in improving these statistics we need to discuss and dismantle systemic barriers to progression. Our relaunch event is the start of that process and we look forward to seeing our members in person for the first time post-pandemic”.
The event is free to attend and in lieu of a ticket cost Women in Law Scotland ask that you consider making a small donation to Scottish Women’s Aid. You can sign up for your place at the event via Eventbrite here and contact the refreshed committee at womeninlawscotland@gmail.com.
