Nominations open for new ‘third sector’ seat on Law Society Council

27th August 2020 | Law Society news

Nominations are being invited to four of the Law Society’s governing Council seats, including a new seat for a solicitor to represent the third sector.

The other three seats that are up for re-election are the solicitor advocate seat, the international seat which represents lawyers outside of Scotland, England and Wales, and the new lawyers’ seat, representing those less than five years’ qualified.

Amanda Millar, President of the Law Society said, “I became a Council member in 2010, representing the Perth constituency, and have found it both challenging and rewarding. As a former SCVO Policy Committee Member, board member then Chair of Mindspace Ltd, as well as the first non-executive Chair of Changing the Chemistry, a role I held until late last year,  I am delighted to have championed the establishment of the third sector seat on our Council.  It is really important  that we have the views of this sector on our Council to ensure all walks of life are represented.

“Being a Council member is a unique opportunity to expand your network, broaden your understanding and represent the views of your constituents, whether they relate to region, sector or stage of career. I would strongly encourage my fellow Scottish solicitors to stand for election.”

Nominations for the four available seats in these elections are currently being invited and should be submitted by 12 noon Thursday 10 September.

The nominations for the new Council member for the third sector will be reviewed and interviews undertaken by the Nominations Committee.  The remaining three Council members will be elected by their fellow ‘constituency’ members. All will be elected for a three-year term.  The successful candidates will be invited to attend nine council meetings a year, which are currently being held via video conference.

Seats are available in the following constituencies.

  • International - 1 seats
  • Solicitor Advocates - 1 seat
  • New lawyers – 1 seat
  • Third sector – 1 seat

Voting will be open from 12 noon on Wednesday 16 September and will close at 12 noon Wednesday 30 September. The successful candidates will be invited to attend their first Council meeting via video conference on Friday 16 October 2020

More information about the application process and what’s involved in being a Council member can be found on our website and any queries can be directed the Law Society Registrar, DavidCullen@lawscot.org.uk
