In-house legal talent shines as rising stars crowned
A local government trainee and an early career solicitor working in finance have been crowned the Law Society of Scotland’s 2026 In-house Rising Stars.
Selected from a strong field of 13 nominees, this year’s winners of the annual competition for early career in-house talent are:
- First- or second-year trainee: Arün Smith, Dumfries and Galloway Council
- Solicitor with up to five years’ PQE: Elise Woodbridge, NatWest Bank plc
Law Society President Patricia Thom congratulated all nominees as she announced the winners at the In-house Annual Conference on Wednesday, 22 April.
In addition to the winners, Alison Howells from the City of Edinburgh Council was named highly commended in the newly qualified category for her work helping families and vulnerable children.
Patricia Thom said: “Congratulations Arün, Elise and Alison. It is clear that you are assets to your teams and the wider legal profession. You should both be very proud of what you’ve achieved in such a short space of time.
“Arün, Elise, the judging panel were impressed with your work ethic and dedication to your organisations so early in your careers, along with how you are both supporting those from underrepresented groups.
“It’s a pleasure to be able to celebrate our talented winners and nominees alongside so many of their in-house colleagues. The depth of new talent shows the strength of Scotland’s in-house sector, and the huge contribution it makes.”
Arün Smith said: “I am immensely grateful to my colleagues, to my supervising solicitors and managers, and to the Council's leadership for supporting me and enabling me to win this year's award in the trainee category.
“As a queer person of colour, it is especially rewarding to know that there is an undoubted place for me in our profession. I look forward to seeing our profession continue its work in being welcoming and reflective of the diversity of our communities.”
Elise Woodbridge said: “I am incredibly touched to have been nominated for the In-House Rising Star Award 2026, and even more delighted to have won.
“I feel truly fortunate to have trained and developed my career within such an amazing in-house legal team at NatWest Group. This award is as much a reflection of my manager, team, and colleagues who consistently coach, support, and inspire me to raise the bar.”

Arün’s nominator described him as demonstrating “exceptional legal rigour and operating at a level far beyond a standard trainee”. They commented that “Arün’s initiatives have significantly enhanced the service’s reputation, marking him as a vital asset to the team”. His client focused approach was praised for “assessing risks that non-legal colleagues might not see coming”.
The judging panel was also impressed with Arün’s additional contributions to the legal profession and wider society. His strong focus on championing equality and diversity has led him to found a charity dedicated to intersectional advocacy for the LGBQT+ and Gaelic communities, he was also the first EDI Officer for the University of Strathclyde Law Clinic Executive Committee.
Arün delivered an interactive workshop at the European Network for Clinical Legal Education Conference entitled Challenging Hegemonic Whiteness in Experiential Legal Learning to encourage wider consideration of how racial justice can be embedded in law schools and clinical legal practices.
Elise Woodbridge, NatWest Bank plc
Elise's nominator commented that “Over my 5-plus years working with them as a trainee and post-qualification, I have witnessed them displaying a level of legal acumen, initiative and maturity that is exceptional for a lawyer at their career stage. [...] They consistently demonstrate strong technical skills as a litigator, amplifying their legal knowledge with sound common sense and commercial nous. They have a calm, unflappable demeanour, which quickly wins the trust of stakeholders and has led to them being asked to provide support on some of the most complex and sensitive matters in the team’s litigation and investigation portfolio.”
Elise was commended for their interest in making it easier for young people – particularly those from ‘non-traditional’ backgrounds – to enter the legal profession, as well as supporting the development of those who want to pursue an in-house career. Within the bank, Elise has contributed to the Culture Working Group, helping to facilitate open and honest conversations about how the legal team can evolve and improve. She has also represented the department on the bank-wide Junior Management Team.
Outside of work, Elise volunteers with Empty Kitchens, Full Hearts in Edinburgh, preparing meals for those in need, and supports Cash for Kids’ Mission Christmas by sorting and packaging gifts for children in care or low‑income families.
