Join our new lawyers reference group

Applications are still open for anyone wanting to join our new lawyers reference group! The group meets bi-annually in Edinburgh to discuss issues affecting new lawyers and contribute to the Law Society's strategy in related areas.

What is the new lawyers reference group?

The group was set up in 2011 to facilitate effective two-way communication between the Society and our new lawyer stakeholders; to ensure that we have a way of understanding the needs and views of new lawyers so we can effectively support them.

We look to ensure the group’s make-up reflects a complete cross-section of new lawyers, comprising students, trainees, NQs, individuals outwith the central belt, working in-house and from both large and small firms.

Any law students, trainees and NQs up to three years PQE are eligible to apply to join the group, provided they are qualified/will be qualifying in the Scottish jurisdiction.

The aims and functions of the group are:

• To consider and assess the work of the Society in relation to new lawyers. The range of topics will primarily focus on the activities set out in the Supporting New Lawyers Strategy but may on occasion cover other related topics
• To work towards an effective two-way flow of information on matters relating to new lawyers between the Society and new lawyers
• To generate new ideas to inform the Society’s strategy for supporting new lawyers going forward

In recent meetings the group has discussed a variety of topics, including:

• What stress means for new lawyers
• How technology is changing the profession and how new lawyers can ‘future proof’ themselves and be prepared for change
• In-house traineeships: how they’re perceived by new lawyers

Prior to each meeting, group members will be invited to put forward any items for the agenda that they feel are pertinent.

The group meets approximately bi-annually at the Law Society of Scotland’s offices in Atria 1, Morrison Street, Edinburgh. Meetings are usually expected to take place from around 6-8pm. Those applying are expected to commit to a minimum of three meetings.

Reasonable travel expenses are reimbursed.
