Sixty-four solicitors have been formally welcomed to the profession, in the Law Society of Scotland’s first admissions ceremony of 2024.
Law Society President Sheila Webster presented each new solicitor with a certificate of enrolment as friends and family members watched on at the historic Signet Library in central Edinburgh.
Today’s certificates are the first to bear the Law Society’s recently refreshed coat of arms. The new solicitors' names will now be added to the roll of Scottish solicitors.
Ms Webster and Law Society Chief Executive Diane McGiffen both addressed those gathered, to congratulate Scotland’s newest solicitors and encourage them to make their marks in the legal sector.
Sheila Webster said: “It truly is a privilege to be involved in the first admissions ceremony of 2024, in what is an extra special year as the Law Society of Scotland celebrates its 75th anniversary. Today is a great reminder of the solicitor profession’s proud past and bright future.”
Diane McGiffen said: “I’m excited and proud to welcome this group of new members to the Law Society and to the solicitor profession. Each has demonstrated hard work and determination, and we can’t wait to see their contributions in the years ahead.”
The Rt Hon. Lady Dorrian was the ceremony’s guest speaker, drawing on her career as the first female Lord Justice Clerk and President of the Second Division of the Inner House of the Court of Session.
She said: “It is a tremendous privilege and one which, I have no doubt, you will find very rewarding. I hope you will always approach your role with diligence, awareness of the broader responsibilities distilled by society upon you, and approach that not only with compassion and humility but with humanity.”
