What’s the latest with Scotland’s Land Information Service?

27th March 2019 | Law Society news

Calum Shepherd, Service Owner for Scotland’s Land Information Service (ScotLIS) at Registers of Scotland (RoS), keeps us up to date with the latest developments on the service.

We’re making it easier for the public to access land and property data

We’ll be introducing the option for people to purchase the title plan and title sheet directly from ScotLIS for £3 plus VAT, without having to have an account with us. Once purchased, these documents will automatically be emailed to the individual in PDF form, making it quicker and cheaper than before for the public to access land and property information. As a public register, this information has of course always been available but at the moment, members of the public can only request it by going through our Customer Services team. These changes are strongly rooted in user research, with the team having spent the past year engaging with over 400 members of the public across Scotland to understand the best way for them to access this information.

In terms of what this means for the legal profession, the changes won’t materially change your role. However it might mean that clients approach you for legal advice based on information and documents they have accessed in this new way.

We’re continuing to develop the service for our business users

We’re constantly talking to business users and reviewing customer insights to find out what we can do to improve your experience. Recent improvements to the service include:

  • The ability to download your purchase history as a .csv file
  • Making title update applications free of charge

I’d encourage you to have a look at the product updates section on the business home page to stay on top of the latest changes. In addition, if you’d like to give feedback on the service, click on the feedback link at the top of any page to share your thoughts.

We’re supporting business users to get the most from ScotLIS

Whether you’re a regular user of ScotLIS or only use it occasionally, you might feel you need a bit of guidance to help you get the most from the service. Between March and August this year, we’ll be hosting a series of webinars to bring you up to speed with all aspects of the service so you can master your search. For more details on the webinars, follow our social channels or you can email events@ros.gov.uk. For new users we’ve created a virtual tour of the Land Register – to access this log in to ScotLIS and select ‘Take a tour – searching the Land Register’ under product updates.

To keep up to date with the latest ScotLIS news, follow us on Twitter @RegistersofScot, LinkedIn or Facebook or keep an eye on the Registers of Scotland blog.

To stay on top of the latest legal and policy developments in land and property registration, sign up to our new monthly legal bulletin. To do this visit our mailing list page and select ‘Registers of Scotland newsletter’.
