A career outside a big firm Our annual careers roadshow for students!

7th January 2019 | New lawyers

Are you an LLB or DPLP student who's keen to find out about working in-house or for a high street firm? Our newest roadshow for students is bringing employers to you!

It's completely free to attend and all LLB and Diploma students are welcome to come along.

What's happening?

We know it's easier to find out about some career options than others, and it tends to be especially easy to find out about working for a big firm. It's usually harder to find the information you want about high street firms and in-house organisations.

According to our 2016/17 data, 39% of traineeships are based in firms with 0-10 partners and a further 11% are within in-house legal teams. We want to ensure all law students find out about the breadth of opportunities available as there are so many different types of employers that make up the Scottish legal sector. We ran these roadshows focusing on a career outside a big firm and they're back by popular demand for February 2019.

Representatives from high street firms and in-house organisations will feature in a chaired Q&A session to answers questions like:

  • What do high street employers look for in candidates?
  • What's the best way to approach a high street employer?
  • Do speculative applications actually work?
  • What does a traineeship in-house look like?
  • Where can you find out about in-house employers?

There will then be the opportunity to ask employers questions one to one and network with fellow students in your local area. As each event will incorporate different university cohorts, it's a great way to expand your local network.

Can I come along?

All LLB and Diploma in Legal Practice students are eligible to attend. You can also come along if you've finished the Diploma but are still looking for a traineeship. These events won't be hosted at your university, so you can attend any of our events that are most convenient for you in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The events are designed to support you. We've been listening to students and you've told us you'd like to hear about other employers.

When is my local event?

All the events are taking place in the evening, 5.30-7pm, on the following dates:

  • Aberdeen: Tuesday 12 February 2019, Society of Advocates
  • Glasgow: Monday 18 February 2019, Royal Faculty of Procurators Glasgow
  • Edinburgh: Tuesday 26 February 2019, The Law Society of Scotland
  • Dundee: Thursday 28 February 2019, Scottish Social Services Council's offices

Register now!

Sign up for any of the roadshows on our events website by using the links above for the city you want to attend. Spaces are limited based on venue capacity, so ensure you book early to avoid disappointment!
