Two nominations for the Law Society of Scotland vice president

Austin Lafferty and John Mulholland have been nominated to become the next vice president of the Law Society of Scotland. 

Council members will vote for their preferred candidate and the result will be announced at the December meeting.  The successful candidate will succeed current Vice President, Alison Atack when she takes up the role of president next May 2018.

Austin Lafferty runs his own multi-branch firm in and around Glasgow, advising individuals and businesses on a wide range of issues.  Austin joined Council in 2006, is the current convener of the Professional Practice Committee and was vice president of the Society from 2011-2012 and president from 2012-2013.

John Mulholland is a criminal law consultant at Falkirk-based Marshall Wilson Law Group, prior to which his private practice work includes running his own firm for almost ten years. He joined Council in 2012, is a member of the Society’s Board and the current Law Society treasurer.  He is convener of both the Nominations committee and the Finance Committee and sits on the Appeals and Reviews Subcommittee.

Law Society President, Graham Matthews, said, “I am extremely pleased to congratulate both Austin and John on their nominations to become the Society’s next vice president and I know that Alison would be delighted to have the support of either candidate when she takes up the presidential reigns next May.

“Austin and John both demonstrate a keen appreciation of the issues and concerns facing Scottish solicitors in their roles as constituency Council members representing their colleagues in Glasgow and Strathkelvin and Alloa, Falkirk, Linlithgow and Stirling.

“Both candidates have an impressive breadth of experience and their Council colleagues will have a difficult decision to make when they elect our next vice president in December. Whatever the outcome, I would like to thank both Austin and John for standing, for their exemplary contributions to date and I look forward to working with them in the future”.

The new vice president-elect will be confirmed at the Society’s December Council meeting.

Current president, Graham Matthews will move in to the role of immediate past president in May 2018.
