Inverness site earmarked for new prison
A preferred site in Inverness for the new HM Prison Highland has been identified by the Scottish Prison Service.
SPS, which was previously interested in a site at Milton of Leys, has now reached agreement with the owners of 7.2 hectares next to Inverness retail park. Other neighbours include two business parks and the University of the Highlands & Islands.
A planning application will be submitted in due course.
Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson commented: “I’m pleased that SPS have now reached this stage and look forward to the development of a new fit for purpose prison which can provide suitable accommodation for people in custody from the Highlands and Islands – keeping them closer to their families and their communities."
