Society launches 2018 BaubleFest campaign in aid of Foundation

This year's BaubleFest campaign to boost funds for the Lawscot Foundation charity supporting law students from underprivileged backgrounds, has been launched by the Law Society of Scotland.

Caroline Court, partner at law firm Davidson Chalmers in Edinburgh, was joined by two Lawscot Foundation students, Demi and Alisha, to launch this year’s Christmas campaign in aid of the Foundation, part of the Society's drive for fair and equal access to the legal profession.

Set up by the Society in 2016, the Foundation is now helping fund 17 students through their law degree. For every donation made during BaubleFest (3-21 December), a bauble featuring the donor's name, individual or organisation, will be added to the Society’s Christmas tree. The star on the tree will be awarded to the individual, firm or organisation that takes the best #BaubleFest selfie and tweets it to @LawscotCharity.

Demi, who is currently studying at the University of Edinburgh, has achieved outstanding academic success despite very challenging circumstances. She commented: "I’m so grateful for all of the support the profession has shown the Lawscot Foundation. Thanks to their help I was able to start studying law. I am inspired to help those who are in a similar position to me.

"In my first year of uni the funding I received from the Foundation allowed me to live away from home, which let me fully experience university life, and gain my own space and independence, which I wouldn’t have had otherwise."

Caroline Court added: "I support the Foundation because it’s important that the profession remains open to all, regardless of background and financial circumstances. The work they do is much needed and will help ensure that the profession remains diverse and inclusive."

Heather McKendrick, head of careers and outreach at Law Society, said: "We’re asking people to help us to support the next generation of Scottish solicitors by sponsoring a bauble on our Christmas tree. The money donated will go towards funding the legal education of students from less advantaged backgrounds.

"We want to offer bursaries to as many people and we’ve seen a great deal of enthusiasm within the profession. We hope that our members will continue to help us ensure there is a lasting legacy for the next generation of Scottish solicitors."
