Take down terrorist content in 60 minutes or be fined, EU to propose

Social media sites in Europe that contain extremist content will have to remove it within 60 minutes or be fined, under new regulations being prepared by the European Commission.

The Commission said yesterday that it will next month publish draft regulations, which will require to be approved by the European Parliament as well as a majority of member states.

It previously proposed voluntary action by platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, each of which now say they are frequently acting to remove terrorist content.
