Hiring trainees? Make sure you’re featured on our traineeship information hub
Our Careers and Wellbeing Manager Olivia Moore encourages employers to feature their traineeship opportunities on our new traineeship information hub and explains how this can be a useful way to attract applications from law students and graduates.
We have recently created an online traineeship information hub, which helps students find out key information about employers, in one place.
The hub is not just a mine of information for students looking at the next step towards becoming a solicitor, but is helpful for employers too .
If you’re hiring future trainees as a law firm or in-house organisation, you’ll understand how critical it is to connect with students and graduates.
To attract the best talent, as an employer you need to take a proactive approach to building relationships with future trainees and clearly communicate who you are, who you’re looking for and what your recruitment process is like.
To join the hub, all employers need to do is fill in a simple questionnaire which is uploaded to our website. It’s designed to give students an insight into your organisation’s requirements and processes with questions including:
- Are there any minimum academic requirements that you require? If so, what are they?
- When will you start recruiting for traineeships this year and when will the closing date be for applications?
- Roughly, how many traineeships do you offer per year?
Application processes have become a complex task for prospective trainees to balance alongside their work or study. With a massive range of styles of application, assessment centres and interview styles, investing in making multiple applications is a major time commitment for students. The more information you can give to students about what this process will involve from the outset, the more likely they will be to engage with the process and feel that it isn’t an insurmountable task on top of their other work. This means they are more likely to apply, broadening the pool you can recruit from We ask employers to tell us:
- How many rounds of interview would you normally expect?
- Do you use assessment centres?
- Are your interviews competency based?
According to The Bright Network’s 2022/23 graduate insights survey of students across the UK, 89% of students think about an employer’s commitment to diversity and inclusion before applying, and 91% think about their commitment to employee wellbeing. Therefore, we encourage employers to talk about their support networks up front, and share information on the traineeship hub about any staff networks within your organisation.
We are in a world where jobseekers look for more opportunities online rather than using traditional services like careers fairs and targeting employers directly with a knock on the door or a phonecall. Thinking creatively about how you can promote yourself to students and graduates digitally is critical, so we recommend using the traineeship hub to build your online presence.
