Court wi-fi access upgrades coming, SCTS confirms
Scottish Courts & Tribunals Service has reaffirmed its commitment to improving wi-fi access for court users across Scotland’s 50 primary court locations, with further enhancements due to take effect over the summer and beyond.
Following research to understand users’ needs, three main strands of work are currently underway on improvements that can be applied across the court estate, much of which has complex building layouts. These are:
- Improved wi-fi capability – a further increase in bandwidth for guest users, using current infrastructure, is to be rolled out this summer.
- Wider wi-fi coverage – SCTS aims to provide as close as possible to 100% wi-fi coverage in all court and tribunals buildings. To support this, wi-fi infrastructure will be replaced later this year.
- 4/5G cellular coverage – with the increasing use of two factor authentication via mobile devices, SCTS is investigating options to increase 4/5G coverage in all buildings through potential installation of booster solutions.
Last year SCTS doubled the bandwidth available for users of guest wi-fi, and quadrupled the time available before each session expired. SCTS said it remains “absolutely committed to providing high quality digital access in all our courts and tribunals and we will provide further updates as the work progresses”.
