Four Covid-19 inquiry counsel step down as chair goes
Four of the six-strong counsel team supporting the Scottish Covid-19 public inquiry have resigned, it has been confirmed.
The news came a day after it was announced that the chair of the inquiry, judge Lady Poole, was to step down for personal reasons.
Since it was set up in December 2021, the independent inquiry has been building a team and has carried out a research exercise to support its four "investigative portfolios", on the public sector response to Covid, financial and welfare support to businesses and individuals, the provision of health and social care services, and education including certification) and the impact on young people. It has not yet begun evidence sessions.
Deputy First Minister John Swinney said when announcing Lady Poole's resignation that he had spoken with the Lord President, Lord Carloway, about finding a replacement for Lady Poole.was informed of her decision last week and that she intends to stand down for personal reasons.
Families affected by Covid-related death have expressed concern at the likely delay to the inquiry, but the Scottish Government has said it is "keen to help ensure the excellent progress made so far by the inquiry is continued".
