Homicides down to new low in Scotland
Homicides in Scotland in 2021-22 were the lowest since comparable records began in 1976, according to newly published figures from the Chief Statistician.
The total of 53 victims was six fewer than the 59 victims recorded in 2020-21. Over the previous 10 years the number of victims each year had remained relatively stable at between 59 and 66.
Of the 53 victims recorded in 2021-22, 70% (37) were male and 30% (16) were female. Nine of the 16 female victims were killed by a partner or ex-partner; 22 of the 36 male victims were killed by an acquaintance.
During the year, 63 persons were accused of homicide, of which 97% (61) were male. All of the cases that arose in 2021-22 were solved.
A sharp instrument remained the main method of killing, accounting for 47% (25) of homicide victims.
Justice Secretary Keith Brown commented: "Scotland continues to be a safe place to live and this latest reduction in homicides is in line with the significant downward trend seen in other categories of violent crime over the past 15 years.
"However every death caused by homicide is a tragedy that leaves grieving families and friends in its wake, which is why tackling all forms of violent crime continues to be a top priority for this Government."
