Icelander elected President of Human Rights Court
Icelandic judge Robert Spano has been elected the next President of the European Court of Human Rights.
The 47 year old has been a judge of the Strasbourg court since November 2013, a President of Section from 1 May 2017 to 30 April 2019 and Vice President of the court since 5 May 2019.
His prior career was in the Faculty of Law at the University of Iceland, alongside which he held various public appointments.
He will take up office on 18 May 2020, succeeding Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos of Greece.
