Law firm offers free wills to NHS staff as thank you

24th April 2020 | executries

A Scottish legal firm has made a special offer of free wills to NHS workers, and carers, as its managing director recovers from a serious bout of suspected coronavirus.

Nicholas Scullion, of Glasgow and Hamilton practice Scullion LAW, is recovering at home after spending nine days in isolation at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital last month, and believes the NHS saved his life. Complications prevented him being properly tested for COVID-19, but he says he showed all the symptoms and felt as if he had been "run over by a bus".

Having spoken of his experience for this month's Journal, which was followed by coverage in local papers in Glasgow, Mr Scullion says he has been "inundated with kind wishes and nice messages from other lawyers, friends, acquaintances and people whom I hardly know. It’s truly been humbling".

Now his firm, which is already partnering for the sixth year with Marie Curie to write free wills for anyone over 18 who considers leaving a legacy to Marie Curie in their will, has launched a free will promotion which is open to anyone who works for the NHS or is a carer.

"The promotion only launched on Monday this week, and as of Thursday we have had 75 enquiries", Mr Scullion told the Journal.

"We are embracing all the new technologies to allow us to do this all remotely and the promotion is bringing a lot of positivity and energy at a much needed time.

"It is really important to give something back and I really hope that in a small way, Scullion LAW are doing our bit."

In this month's Journal article, Mr Scullion also told how his firm wanted to review all possibilities for its staff before putting them on furlough, as new business slumped due to the coronavirus shutdown.

Giving an update, he said they had managed to complete many of the projects that I set out, and held onto their full team without anyone going onto furlough until Easter. Since then, they have begun to furlough, but "The team have been really brilliant at understanding and accepting that we are doing all we can for the benefit of the business which in turn will benefit all of us."
