Lawscot Foundation applications open for 2023 awards
Applications have opened for this year’s round of Lawscot Foundation scholarships for Scots law students from less-advantaged backgrounds.
The scholarships will provide a package of support to successful applicants starting the LLB course at a Scottish university in the coming academic year, including a bursary along with mentoring, networking and work experience opportunities.
The trustees of the Foundation have agreed to a permanent increase of the annual payment from £2,500 to £,2750, for both existing and future bursary holders.
Lawscot Foundation Chair Christine McLintock said: “We’re excited to see the talent and enthusiasm for the law that will emerge through this year’s application process. To students from less-advantaged backgrounds with an interest in the law, I’d strongly encourage you to apply.
“Supporting successful applicants each year cuts to the core of why the Lawscot Foundation exists. Many of our current scholars would have found it difficult if not impossible to attend university without the support of the Lawscot Foundation, which would be a huge loss for them and the profession.
“We have reviewed the bursary payments that are provided to Lawscot Foundation students, and recognised that an uplift is appropriate given the cost-of-living pressures that are being felt across the UK. Inflationary pressures obviously cause the most issues for people who were already stressed about their finances.
“That’s why we’re taking short-term and long-term action to adjust our bursary payments. We will continue to monitor the situation and liaise with our students, sponsors and others to ensure that the Lawscot Foundation continues to make a difference for the Scottish legal sector and the communities and businesses it serves.”
Applications can be made at the Lawscot Foundation website. They will be accepted from qualifying students until 5pm on Friday 16 June 2023.
