Megrahi family begins further appeal against conviction
A new appeal against the conviction of the man found guilty of the Lockerbie bombing has been lodged at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh.
The family of the late Abdelbaset al-Megrahi lodged the appeal after the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission (SCCRC) referred the case to the High Court in March, having completed a second investigation into the conviction.
It concluded that a miscarriage of justice might have occurred on the basis of two of the six grounds of review put forward by the family, "unreasonable verdict" and non-disclosure.
Mr Megrahi was found guilty in 2001 of the murder of 270 people in the bombing of Pan-Am fight 103 over Lockerbie in December 1988. Since then campaigners on his behalf have claimed that a miscarriage of justice took place.
An earlier appeal by Mr Megrahi personally was abandoned shortly before he was released in prison on compassionate grounds due to terminal cancer. He died in 2012.
