New disability group issues invitation to first meeting
A new group for people in the Scottish legal sector with a disability has issued an open invitation to a meeting next week.
Tom McGovern and Fraser Mackay founded Disabling Barriers Scotland in December, and have since been speaking to other groups, setting up the committee and drafting a mission statement. Membership is restricted to those with a disability, but the group is open to support from all who have an interest in making the sector more accessible, and supporters are welcome to attend group meetings.
The founders say they have received a lot of enthusiasm and offers of support, and “We believe that collectively we can create change and invite you along to our next meeting to learn more about our aims and objectives.”
Taking place on Tuesday 7 March at 17.30, the meeting will also welcome three speakers:
- Sheriff Raymond Small, who has received formal training in dealing with disability in court and will talk about this;
- Brian Dempsey, disability co-ordinator for Dundee University, who will give an insight into the issues faced by students; and
- Mike Guthrie, trustee of Narcolepsy UK, who will discuss its work and how an employer could best support a person with narcolepsy.
Those wishing to join the meeting are asked to email disablingbarriersscotland@gmail.com, briefly detailing their interest. A meeting link will then be sent.
