Scottish Arbitration Centre launches arbitrator panels
The Scottish Arbitration Centre has launched an initial panel of invited arbitrators, both domestic and international, from which appointments by the Centre will normally be made.
At the same time it is inviting applications from arbitrators to join the panels.
Those now listed on the domestic panel are, Shona Frame, solicitor, CMS; Janey Milligan, chartered quantity surveyor, Construction Dispute Resolution; Susanne Tanner KC, Ampersand Advocates; and Sheila Webster, solicitor, Davidson Chalmers Stewart.
Arbitrators on the international panel are Chiann Bao, Singapore/Hong Kong; Juliet Blanch, England & Wales; Philippa Charles, England & Wales/Republic of Ireland; Anne K Hoffmann, UAE/Germany; Ndanga Kamau, Kenya; Professor Dr Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler, Switzerland; Lindy Patterson KC, England & Wales/Scotland; Lucy Reed, USA; Patricia Saiz, Spain; Melanie Van Leeuwen, France/The Netherlands; Carita Wallgren-Lindholm, Finland/Sweden; and Galina Zukova, France/Latvia.
Membership of either panel, which may be by invitation or application, will be for a period of three years renewable at the invitation of the Centre, ending on 31 December of the third year.
Among eight criteria for inclusion on the domestic panel, applicants must have issued at least two arbitration awards; demonstrate at least five years’ experience in arbitration or litigation; and be a Fellow of the CIArb or demonstrate a similar level of knowledge of arbitration law and practice.
Lord Glennie, chairman of the Centre, said: "We hope that a panel model will provide clients with further confidence in our services, given the calibre of our arbitrators."
Noting that the initial panel is all female, Andrew Mackenzie, CEO of the Centre, added: "This move further supports the groundbreaking provision in our rules that forces consideration of diversity and inclusion in respect of arbitral appointments.
"We have taken account of wider diversity and inclusion with our initial panel too, with a list of practitioners that ensures a geographical and experience mix. We also have a variety of professions involved, with advocates, barristers, solicitors and surveyors on the panels."
